DTF printing on textiles: your logo in full colour, even in small runs
DTF printing (Direct To Film) reproduces a full-colour design, with gradients and fine details, on almost any textile. It needs no screen per colour, which makes it the most flexible technique for complex designs and short runs.
How does DTF printing work?
- The design is printed digitally onto a transparent film.
- An adhesive powder is applied to the still-wet ink, then melted with heat.
- The film is heat-pressed onto the garment.
- The film is peeled off: only the design stays on the fabric.
When should you choose DTF?
- Your logo has many colours, a gradient or a photo.
- You are ordering a small or medium run, or several different designs.
- Each piece carries a different name or number.
- The fabric is a cotton-polyester blend, or polyester.
- You want to print several positions: chest, back, sleeve.
DTF, screen printing, embroidery or flex?
| Criterion | DTF | Screen printing | Embroidery | Flex |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Multicolour design or photo | Yes | Limited: one screen per colour | No | No |
| Small run | Very suitable | Not cost-effective | Suitable | Suitable |
| Large run | Possible | Most cost-effective | Suitable | Not very suitable |
| Feel | Thin, soft layer, noticeable on large solid areas | Light or absorbed into the fabric | Raised, premium finish | Smooth film |
| Materials | Cotton, polyester, blends | Mainly cotton and blends | Heavy fabrics, polos, jackets, caps | Most textiles |
For large runs with few colours, screen printing remains cheaper; for a premium polo or jacket, embroidery gives a more durable result. All transfer techniques are compared on the transfer printing page.
Which products?
DTF can be applied to our T-shirts, hoodies, jackets and tote bags. GOTS or OEKO-TEX certified textiles from the catalogue are printed the same way. Dark fabrics need a few precautions: see our tips for dark garments.
Care
Wash the garment inside out at 30 or 40 °C, without fabric softener. Avoid the tumble dryer and never iron directly on the design. These simple steps make the print last much longer.
Frequently asked questions
Does DTF printing survive washing?
Yes, if the care instructions above are followed. For garments worn and washed every day, screen printing or embroidery remain more resistant.
How is it different from DTG?
DTG prints directly onto the fabric and mainly suits light cotton. DTF goes through a film and also works on polyester and dark textiles.
Is DTF suitable for softshell jackets?
Yes, with a press set up for these materials. Our article which technique for softshell explains the options.
Which file should I provide?
A vector file (AI, PDF, SVG) or a high-resolution image on a transparent background (PNG).
